Evelina Belevich - Class of 2015

On track for motorsport success

Congratulations to Evelina who has just started a new job working for the W Series Championship, the female version of Formula One and the first global female-only motorsport.

Drivers are selected purely on their ability and the Series’ cars are mechanically identical so that races are won by the most talented drivers rather than those with the wealthiest backers.

The aim is to inspire young girls to go karting, bringing more females into the grassroots of the sport. Their mission is the idea that 'if you can see it, you can be it'.

Evelina is the drivers’ liaison and operations co-ordinator and is loving it. “It’s all very new and I’m learning lots! It’s great to be part of an organisation that challenges women to be the best version of themselves – much like Tiffin Girls!”

It is thanks to a completely different sport that Evelina joined The Tiffin Girls' School. She started playing tennis at the age of five or six when she took part in friendly sessions funded and organised by The All England Tennis Club in primary schools. They provided free coaching and sessions at the weekend. She was then recognised as having talent and offered more free coaching and asked to join the tennis squad. Her tennis coach had been to Tiffin Girls' and said it was a fantastic school and that she should give it a go. So she did, and got a place. Recognised as a sporty person at school, Evelina was allowed to take some time off for regional and national competitions.

However, she got involved in other sport, netball, which she had never tried before. “The teachers were always good at backing you up and encouraging you,” remembers Evelina. She tells us she absolutely loved school and is still in touch with all her core friendship group – about nine or ten girls. She was one of the first six girls to be invited to the Wimbledon ball girls try out. “It was really cool – all six of us were accepted. Wimbledon take a total of 250 ball girls and boys to train. The teachers were amazing and drove us to the courts after school and before school for training at 7am.”

After leaving Tiffin Girls', Evelina studied psychology at Exeter and joined the university tennis team there. But she decided not to become a professional tennis player and just to enjoy it as a hobby. She had been playing at national level which was intense. After Exeter, Evelina moved into motorsports working for IMG with the speedway team: 4 bikes race round in laps, before moving to the W series.

Evelina gives some valuable advice to current students: “Get stuck in. Time goes by so quickly! Get involved in all the opportunities. Keep yourself as busy as you can! Sports Centre: Having a new Sports Centre is so exciting and will encourage students to try lots more sport out."
